To become a Leader-in-Training (LIT), you must…

  • be at least 14 years old
  • be willing to work at least one full week of camp
  • willing to work outdoors
  • have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination


  • Experience or interest related to one or more of the following topics: teaching, Philadelphia/Germantown history, history, gardening, agriculture, and/or horticulture.
  • Interest in or experience working outdoors
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and work within a team and independently
  • Ability to communicate and work with children and adults in a mature, professional manner
  • Must be well-organized, self-motivated, creative, energetic, flexible, and a team player
  • Must work well with children of all ages and abilities
  • Must be willing to ask for help and receive help and positive redirection

 2018 Schedule

LITs can choose volunteer one week, multiple weeks or all weeks of camp.

Summer Seedlings (ages 5-8) Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

July 9-13:                 Secret Garden and Colonial America
July 16-20:              Wiggly Worms and Interesting Insects
July 23-27:              Things with Wings
July 30-August 3:  Farming Fun and Fabulous Friends
August 6-10:           Celebrating Summer and Lenape Life


  • Arrive on time for every assigned day
  • Support educators with preparing and teaching lessons and activities
  • Support educators and children with snack and lunch set-up and clean up
  • Interact and support children with needs as they arise
  • Clean up and put away equipment and supplies used for programs
  • Collect and remove compost, garbage, and recycling
  • Participate in lesson follow-up with Camp Manager  after each lesson/week to discuss strengths, concerns and/or suggestions
  • If interested, in conjunction with Camp Manager, create and/or lead activities
  • Other duties as necessary


  • Official documentation of hours volunteered
  • General Letter of Recommendation (dependent upon good work ethic)
