September already!

Despite the oppressive heat, it actually is September and with September comes the return of cool weather crops, which are my personal favorite to grow. In particular, the beds of kale and collard greens are getting closer and closer to harvestable size. These plants were put in the ground in mid-July and have been growing away every since. I keep them covered with a fine-meshed bug net, which keeps out cabbage moths, Harlequin beetles, and other pests while at the same time not increasing the temperature underneath it as thicker materials like floating row cover would do.
