Undaunted by Dialects: Reliable, Repeatable Approach to Learning New Dialects
with Roger Ainslie
In this one-day workshop, dialect coach Roger Ainslie will help you build a solid, reliable, repeatable approach to learning new dialects. Having a good ear and/or being a good mimic can help you, but it won’t take you as far as technique grounded in specifics! Most productions these days cannot or will not hire a dialect coach so it falls to the actors to coach themselves. Roger will teach you how! From basic vowel substitutions to melody and tempo to vocal posture and placement, Roger will take you through a step by step methodology. We will apply it to a specific accent over the course of the workshop, but by the end you will be able to use this technique for any dialect in any show you do!
Roger Ainslie is a professional actor, voice teacher, and dialect coach. A graduate of Northwestern University, he has done a ton of regional theatre, independent films, and television. His television credits include House MD, iCarly, and House of Cards, acting in principle roles opposite the likes of Emmy-winner Hugh Laurie and Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey. He has also been teaching at various levels for over twenty years in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. After getting his MFA from the University of Virginia, he recently decided to move back to the Philadelphia area where he grew up, though he is still the dialect coach for Virginia Repertory Theatre. He is currently a professor of acting at Rowan University and a certified teacher of the Lessac Voice and Body Pedagogy.
